Biomass Wastes Suitable To Make Pellets

BY James Wang

Biomass pellets is a general term that describes all fuel pellets forms that are produced from materials that are organic. The definition includes wood pellets. There are various biomass materials that can be used in the production of fuel pellets for boilers and stoves. The biomass wastes suitable to make pellets include food crops such as barley and wheat straw. In most cases, these materials are regarded as waste and are burnt in the field. Through the use of these materials for the production of pellets which has in the recent past grown in popularity to become a highly viable commodity makes the production of food crops more profitable without causing increases in the prices of food.

Energy_biomass_wasteThere are biomass energy crops such as switch grass and hemp which are purposely grown for pellet fuel. To meet the ever increasing demand, the land should first be used for the production of food. The wastes from the food crops that have been harvested can then be placed in a pelletizer for production of biomass pellet fuel.

However, it should be noted that there are land areas whereby it is not possible to grow food crops. In that instance, there are energy crops that can be purposely grown in pellet making machine or biomass pellet mill. These crops include hemp, SRC willow, switch grass, red canary grass and miscanthus. Hemp is one of the rare food crops that can be grown in land that is not suitable for the growing of food crops. Hemp is among the biomass materials that re most promoting for the production of fuel pellets that produce ash contents that is similar to wood pellets of standard grade.
